CCME’s Water Quality Index Tool
The CCME Water Quality Index (WQI) is a tool developed by the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment to simplify and communicate complex water quality data to the public. It converts measured water quality parameters into a single score between 0 (worst) and 100 (best), using three factors to assess how well water quality guidelines are met: scope (number of parameters failing guidelines), frequency (how often guidelines are missed), and amplitude (by how much guidelines are missed). The index is flexible, allowing users to select appropriate water quality parameters and guidelines for specific sites, and it is used widely in Canada and internationally for water quality reporting.
